Research now demonstrates the intimate connection between adverse childhood experiences, how the brain processes strong emotions, and the effect on the body’s immune, nervous, and hormonal systems.  When emotions automatically trigger the fight/flight/freeze response in the body, persistent physical and emotional symptoms (such as headache, fatigue, chronic pain, gastrointestinal disturbance, anxiety and depression) can result.  Traditional medical investigations are often unable to detect the causes of these symptoms leading to lack of effective treatment and frustration on the part of patient and clinician.

Dr Angela Cooper speak about her work within 2 family practice medicine centres in Halifax Nova Scotia, using short term dynamic psychotherapy to effectively treat the root cause of these ailments.

Saturday Workshop – “Maximizing Therapeutic Effectiveness”:

ENDED October 2018, Vancouver B.C: Trauma-Informed Practice Training: Intergenerational Transmissions:  “Healing the Unfinished Business Behind Symptoms of the Present”. Genogram and Family Systems Certificate Workshop, (Certificate)  – based on the work of Dr. Murray Bowen and Dr. Monica McGoldrick.

Genograms are a transformational catalyst for healing and evolution.  Research over the last twenty years in particular has provided a tremendous amount of information showing how much of our current suffering in life is transmitted epigenetically through intergenerational experiences. The way we perceive the world and our experiences are filtered through the ‘lessons’ and experiences of the generations that came before us, both at a biological level and psychological/social/emotional level.  Genograms allow us to gain powerful and often transformative new insight and awareness about our family system, particularly the beliefs, ‘rules’  and ways of being that are transmitted through the system.  As such, creating a family genogram can provide a powerful opportunity to heal current struggles and live from a place of pro-activity rather than reactivity.

Much of the current discussion in this area is focusing on the transmission of intergenerational trauma through the system causing struggles including anxiety, illness, difficulty in relationships and many other forms of suffering. Although important, this focus is also limited.  Much of the way that we see the world today is filtered through and as a result of the beliefs and learnings of the generations that came before us, both functional and dysfunctional. With uncovering the ‘story below the story’ of your unique family system, comes freedom, choice, and a powerful opportunity for profound personal evolution, not only for you, but for your family generations to come.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • The basics: what is a genogram and how to create a comprehensive genogram on your own.
  • Questions for family members that you can use to build the information
  • What are epigenetics;  how genes are ‘turned on’ and ‘turned off’ through the generations.
  • How limiting beliefs are passed down through the generations
  • The limitations of creating a ‘trauma-gram’ – why a comprehensive genogram may be the better choice.
  • How you can identify and break the repetition of the patterns which are causing difficulty/suffering.
  • How your genogram can be used as a catalyst for healing your family’s history, present, and future.

This workshop is open to all, and no prerequisite training is needed.
